Who Requires High Risk Confined Space Training?
This advanced course is designed for professionals who are required to work in environments where a serious, specified risk is present and cannot be eliminated or controlled.
This is essential training for:
- Emergency rescue teams.
- Personnel entering environments with known atmospheric hazards.
- Operators in the chemical, oil & gas, and specialised manufacturing sectors.
- Anyone whose risk assessment mandates the use of full working breathing apparatus (SCBA).
This course provides the knowledge and practical skills required to operate as an entrant, safety attendant, or member of a rescue team.
Course Outline
Day 1
- Legislation & Code of Practice
- Classifications of Confined Spaces
- Confined Space Hazards
Day 2
- Safe Systems of Work
- Confined Space Equipment
- Gas Detection
Day 3
- Breathing Apparatus
- Practical Exercises
Learning Outcomes
This 3-day course combines in-depth theory with extensive practical exercises. Upon completion, delegates will be able to:
- Prepare and Enter: Plan and safely enter high-risk confined spaces following rigorous procedures.
- Use Full Breathing Apparatus: Correctly don, doff, and operate Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) in accordance with manufacturer specifications.
- Implement Safe Work Systems: Develop and follow permit-to-work systems, risk assessments, and emergency plans.
- Conduct Gas Detection: Use multi-gas detectors to interpret atmospheric conditions accurately.
- Perform Emergency Rescue: Utilise tripods, winches, and rescue equipment to execute a safe and effective rescue.
- Apply Industry Standards: Adhere to the HSA Code of Practice and relevant City & Guilds industry standards.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is the main difference between Medium Risk and High Risk training?
The key difference is the breathing apparatus. Medium Risk training focuses on using Escape Breathing Apparatus (for self-rescue), while High Risk training requires the use of full Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), allowing the user to work in a hazardous atmosphere for an extended period. High Risk also has a much stronger emphasis on rescue procedures.
2. Is all equipment provided?
Yes, Holland Safety provides all specialised equipment, including SCBA sets, gas detectors, harnesses, tripods, and winches. You only need to bring your personal PPE (hi-vis vest, hard hat, safety boots).
3. Is this qualification the same as a City & Guilds 6160-03?
The City & Guilds "6160" suite refers to qualifications for working in confined spaces. This Level 2 Award aligns with the high-risk components of that framework, providing a formal, recognised certification for working in high-risk environments.
4. How is the course assessed?
Assessment is a blend of a written examination to test your theoretical knowledge and a series of practical exercises where you must demonstrate your competence in using the equipment and following procedures.
